PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is governed by EC Directive 89/686/EEC and its various amendments and can be defined as any device or appliance that is designed to be worn or held by an individual for protection against one or more health and safety hazards.

PPE is categorised into one of three groups – simple design (Category 1), Intermediate Design (Category 2) and Complex Design (Category 3). Category 1 PPE is intended to protect against only the most minor of risks where the potential effects are superficial and easily reversible. Category 3 PPE is intended to protect against mortal danger or where the risk may seriously or irreversibly harm health. Category 2 PPE refers to those products which do not fall into the other two categories.

Responsibility for the implementation and use of appropriate PPE lies jointly with Employer and Employee and breach of the regulations may well result in significant penalties in addition to the immediate impact upon health.

It follows, therefore, that selection of the correct equipment is critical to achieve the proper levels of protection and the equipment must also be suitable for the wearer in terms of comfort and fit. Training in the correct use of the equipment together with appropriate inspection and maintenance of the equipment is also vital to ensure the correct level of protection is sustained.

The PPE found within this site is compliant with appropriate standards including EN388, EN407, EN 511 and EN 374 for gloves, EN471, EN343, EN342, EN531 and EN 533 for various types of clothing, EN352 for hearing, EN149 for respiration, EN345 for footwear and so on.
